Level one from the curriculum is broken into three phases: 1i, 1ii and 1iii. At the end of your child's first year at school they should be working at 1ii. By the end of their second year they are expected to be writing within 1iii. Below is a guide to see what each phase looks like to help you understand where your child is currently working and what they might need to develop to move forwards.

 

 

1i

 

  • I am starting to write about my personal experiences

  • I am trying to write my idea down

  • I am trying to sound out words needed for my story

  • I know the beginning sounds

  • I am trying to use capital letters to start my story

  • I am trying to use fullstops

  • I am trying to spell list 1 words correctly

 

1ii

 

  • I can write my idea as a simple sentence

  • I am trying to use adjectives

  • I am beginning to use capital letters and fullstops correctly

  • I have spaces between all words

  • I can spell most words from essential list 1 and 2

  • I am trying to sound out words needed for my story

1iii

 

  • I can write at least 3 ideas down

  • I can write about 1 event or experience

  • I am beginning to record my thoughts, feelings and ideas more clearly

  • I am trying to use compound and complex sentences

  • I can write dominant sounds in order

  • I am beginning to use adjectives

  • I am beginning to use capital letters and full stops correctly

  • I can spell most words from essential list 3
